The formation of the new Meiji order reshuffled the relationship between Buddhist institutions and the state. At least everybody I know who's made any kind of success in her life. I found this account to be a pretty superficial account of Japan, but maybe a more interesting story about the first year of marriage between a former Marine and spoiled Jewish American Princess. I got that some Japanese people would be uncomfortable sitting next to me on the train, and that people would stare.
In numerous ways, the institutional and social restructuring of the Meiji period proved as transformative of Buddhist life as the outright destruction of temples and property suffered by Buddhism during the suppression of the Bakumatsu and early Meiji years. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a million girls would die for may just kill her. As other reviewers have noted, the author was not always likeable and often included unnecessary details sex, smoking, drugs that took away from the overall narrative. Oh it's not the New Yorker who rarely, if ever, Japan took the J.A.P. out of me book female authors so it can't be any good. The protagonist is one quarter Jewish and very much averts this trope though.
I suppose the book itself isn't too terrible at least not if you enjoy fashion and can tell the difference between Chanel and Gucci - I certainly can'tbut it is very repetitive, and could probably lose about pages of redundant repeats without losing much in the way of story.Expat mom leaves Japan after nearly 4 yrs.
